Choice to Turn

She didn’t call. She didn’t text. She waited; waited to tell me her devastating news. She wanted to be in a safe place in case the tears began to flow.

“I didn’t make it…again.” My daughter has auditioned for multiply honor choirs over the past two years. This one would mark her fourth rejection. “Maybe God is trying to tell me something. Maybe I am really not good; I’m not supposed to major in music.” I hugged my girl and looked for the right thing to say. I just hate it when those words don’t come.

Out of the blue, she asked if she could download a CD – a band called Gungor. I knew they were good and good for her. I was thrilled that she would want to put it on her iTouch. Moments later, she was out the door.

I was so hopeful that during her lesson her voice instructor would find words of encouragement I didn’t have. Surely Mariah would receive words from a professional. She did…just not the professional I had expected.

When she returned home, Mariah tried to explain the strange mix of emotions she experienced in her car. Her heart hurt over being rejected again, yet as she listened to the words of Gungor pouring through her speakers, Jesus’ presence filled her car. Her spirit turned to His spirit and she began to experience His joy. I could not have been more happy for my girl.

Psalm 34:5 says “Those who look to him are radiant; their faces are never covered with shame.” NIV

Radiant; emitting rays of light, shining; bright with hope and joy. Joy: the emotion of great delight or happiness caused by something exceptionally good or satisfying.

That is who Jesus is; exceptionally good and satisfying.

When we make a choice to turn to Jesus, no matter what is going on around us, we can turn from shame or disappointment to the One who makes us radiant and joyful. Now, if we will just make the choice to turn…
