Courage printable

If you are joining me here today from Proverbs 31 Ministries’ Encouragement for Today, Contagious Courage, welcome!

My friend Amy Carroll used a phrase on her social media recently that I had never heard before: trendy compassion. She used this phrase as she referred to the recent outpouring on social media concerning the shooting death of Ahmaud Arbery. When something tragic happens in our country, we rally and outcry until the next newsworthy event takes place. Then we move on …

I have been guilty of this very thing. As I shared in my devotion today, God has been doing a new work in my heart and in my life, beginning around the same time as I started learning more about some very bold and confident women in the Bible. Women like those in Exodus 1 and 2 have shown me what it looks like to do what is right, do good, even as you feel fearful.

What might that look like for you? Have you wondered about people trafficking in your city? Does something well up inside of you when you see the homeless woman on the corner with a sign? Have you thought about how many kids in the foster care system need a home?

God is calling each of us to our own individual assignments, to be part of a chain of courage, in our community. Just like Shiphrah, Puah, Jochebed, and Miriam, who not only saved Moses but were part of bringing freedom to an entire nation of people, God has a piece for you and me to play in bringing His love, His freedom to those He loves as well.

For me, this has been small steps of investing in the lives of women who are incarcerated or coming out of incarceration through an organization called Changed Choices. (See my little face on their website header? Yep, I’m the grinning gal on the far right. This is a group picture of our volunteers and clients at last year’s retreat.)

Learning to be a friend to someone whose life experiences have been different than mine has, at times, been challenging. But as I have taken small steps, beginning with becoming a listener, I am seeing my own link in a chain of courage.

Maybe you have sensed God giving you the smallest of nudges to take a step to learn more about those in your community who need someone to come alongside of them?

Can I encourage?

Take that baby step. Begin with listening and learning. Draw in and make the proximity between the two of you less. This is a great place to start.

To help you conquer your fears, here’s a beautiful print of 2 Timothy 1:7:  For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.”
