Healing Steps for Your Hurting Heart {Free Download}

If you need healing steps for your hurting heart today, you’re not alone! Most of us have had painful experiences in our lives that we just haven’t fully processed and found the freedom we need to move forward. That is why I have invited my friend, professional counselor, and co-author of Loved and Cherished, Michelle Nietert, to give us some first steps today.

Let’s figure this out together, but first, if you haven’t read my devotion from Proverbs 31 Ministries Encouragement for Today, Healing Steps for Your Hurting Heart, click here and start there first.

The Healing Steps We Need

In the Old Testament book of Isaiah, we can read this prophecy of One who would come to heal us:

“Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed.” Isaiah 53:4-5 (ESV)

I know we often use this verse when we are praying for physical healing, but our heart also has wounds we need healing from. Jesus died to bring us healing from hurts as well.

This promise in Isaiah 53 gives me so much hope. In spite of the hurts I have suffered, or continue to suffer, I can experience His healing and His peace.

  1. This has helped a lot with what I am going through. I do not have agood relationship with my mom. She has been bitter about domething for a long time. I told her she needs to deal with the bitterness or she is never going to be happy.

I am so very glad this was helpful, Suzanne. I have found in some relationships that I need to set some boundaries in place so that the bitterness does not spill over into my life. If you think this might be the same for you, I highly recommend the book Boundaries by Cloud and Townsend.

Your devotion was very helpful to me today, Lynn. I am in a similar boat as you. I just moved my mom to an assisted living community a month ago. All kinds of emotions have been swarming around in my head recently. Prior to the move, I was very happy for her and feeling relieved that we found a nice place for her to live where she can be safe, socialize, and not be so lonely. But since then as my family and I have been cleaning out her condo and getting it ready to sell, I have felt grief, regret, confusion, and sadness… so many mixed emotions as I go through her things. She still longs to come back home to her condo, so it’s doubly hard to donate/throw out/give away her belongings that she collected in her travels and loved so much.
I guess I’m looking for peace from the Lord about all of it, knowing this is the right thing to do. Also, I don’t have anyone but my immediate family and the Lord to help cope with this, as my sister is in a different state and very detached. I’m praying for peace for both my mom and myself in this transition. It’s comforting to know the Lord knows how I feel and He can bring that peace if I just ask and receive it.

    1. Brenda, these life changes can be so hard, I think especially the ones as our parents age. I hope you can reach out to a friend who will listen to your heart and be a comforting ear. Lord, please bring your peace and comfort to Brenda. Strength and hope for tomorrow. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

  3. Cynthia Robinson says:

I am looking forward to this… my relationship with my daughter and her oldest son is deeply strained.
She has Borderline Personality Disorder, He is BiPolar, and life has been a roller coaster ride of vicious gossip and lies all about me…

My grandsons issuse are the latest and he has made accusations from gossip that are just not true and has walked out of my life. Not the first time the gossip has do e this to him and he chose to believe it. The last episode I was able to talk to him and show him that I could have never said the things I was accused of. But I guess that doubt lingered because he has lived with this type of manipulation all his life and my heart truly breaks for him.

I have just let the last episode go… since he moved back home with his mother because she made promises thar I am seeing evidence of that she did not keep… My heart aches for him!

God IS moving in this whole ate though and THAT is what I need to focus on. Trust in HIS promises, and live with HIS joy in my life!

    1. Cynthia – I am so very sorry. Mental illness when not treated can lead to much family pain. I hope you yourself find help and comfort in counseling. It has made such a difference, along with regularly reading God’s word and worship music, in the lives of my family members.

  4. This has been a very difficult year. We are listening and reading and praying and making sure we breathe and release the tears when they come. Thank you for this helpful information.
