How to Pray for Your Family

Which school is best?

How long do I stay at this job?

Is it time to move?

Every day decisions of all shapes and sizes confront us; decisions for ourselves personally and decisions for our family. Having God’s heart and wisdom is paramount in making these life altering decisions.

It is so comforting to me to know, that while I may not have the perfect answers to the questions swirling in my head, I can still pray the perfect prayer: God’s word. When we choose to pray the very words of God,  it is one time in the day when the words we say are perfect and true.

I discovered this passage this weekend., written by Moses, in Psalm 90. I immediately knew it was a prayer I wanted to begin praying for my family. In my prayer journal it went!

“Satisfy us each morning with your unfailing love,
so we may sing for joy to the end of our lives.

Give us gladness in proportion to our former misery!

Replace the evil years with good.

 Let us, your servants, see you work again;
let our children see your glory.

And may the Lord our God show us his approval
    and make our efforts successful.
    Yes, make our efforts successful!”

Psalm 90:14 – 17 (NLT)

Today, Father, we come to You, knowing only Your revolutionary love satisfies us. Fill us again! Fill our family too! There have been seasons, hard seasons and as Your children we ask You to take these hard seasons and make them glad seasons! Through our obedience and desperation for You, replace evil with Your good. Make us a part of the amazing work You are already doing on the earth today. Put us in, Coach! Make our efforts, those which point others to You and make YOU famous, successful! You alone have the words of life! Amen

  1. Thank you so much for this encouragement. I just got back from court…my ex-husband is trying to change our custody agreement. I trust God in this very difficult process. But some days it is so hard. I wish it would all be resolved quickly. David’s prayer is just what I’m praying…”Give us gladness in proportion to our former misery! Replace the evil years with good.” Amen.

Charlotte, I cannot imagine the “misery” you are experiencing! Jesus, I agree in prayer with Charlotte, quickly replace the evil years with good. Give her the daily wisdom and strength she needs. Fill her heart with hope. Amen!

Thank you for this! Our family needs this prayer!
