In the Know – Good Girls Don’t Have to Dress Bad

Back to school shopping. Some years I have dreaded it. The arguing. The eye rolls. Maybe you have been there. I have two solutions to share with you that worked for me as my daughters and I ventured to the outlet mall yesterday.

First, a set budget. Grabbing a piece of paper, I figured out how much money each girl could have based on their needs. Four pairs of jeans at $_____ = $_______. I added a few shirts, new shoes and we had their bottom line. Next we hit the ATM and put each girl’s shopping allowance in an envelope. We were off. No more begging. If the item they wanted fit into their budget and they could can afford it, they could have it. Over the years, this method has really created some bargin shoppers out of my kids. I love to see them stretching their dollars. First place they started yesterday: T.J. Maxx. Girls after my own heart!

Second, Shari Braendel’s new book. In the church, we talk alot about inner beauty and that is a good thing, but inner beauty isn’t the only beauty God sees! He sees the beauty he created on the outside as well.

Psalm 45:11 says “The king is enthralled by your beauty…” The word used for beauty here is the same word used in Esther 1:1. It says that the queen was beautiful to look at. God is a creator; a creative person who makes beautiful things.

Seamstresses, potters, painters, photographers, architects, jewelers, gardeners…isn’t the point of a creator to make things of beauty? God is the King of creation, the perfect artist and his work is you!

Sometimes as beautiful creations, we are unsure of just how to bring out that beauty; how to make the most of it. As moms, we also have in mind how we want our daughters to dress which creates the dressing wars. Can I tell you the answer is here? My dear friend, Shari Braendel, has just released a new book with Zondervan “Good Girls Don’t Have to Dress Bad: A Style Guide for Every Woman”.

This book is absolutely amazing! I am so not exagerrating! In June, I had the great opportunity to go to California to speak with Shari. All the way there, we chatted and perused her new book. Full color with charts showing your best colors, jeans for every body…even how to buy a bra! It is definately a must for every gal. There is even a chapter on modesty for teens that can really help that whole modesty issue!

So…I have two recommendations. Hop over to my friend, Karen Ehman’s blog. She is doing an interview with Shari and hosting a terrific give away. Number two: Order Shari’s book before you head out back-to-school shopping with the kids ’cause if you are like me, you find yourself picking up something for yourself sometimes too!

I’m going to leave this post up for all of next week. First, because I want just that many gals to read about Shari and because I will be at Proverbs 31’s She Speaks Conference. I’ll be back posting in the first week of August.

Happy Stylin’
