Is There Something You Want Me to Do? {{GIVE AWAY DAY}}

Where we go isn't as important as who we go with!

Jesus, is there something you want me to do?

This was the question I was challenged to ask when I read the book, “Come With Me” by my very, special friend Suzie Eller.

Suzie had encouraged me as a reader to write this question on a sticky note and put it where I would see it regularly, asking Jesus, “Is there something you want me to do?”

So I did.

Each time I walked into my office, I saw that bright, pink heart with the simple question. I asked it.

Most of the time, His answers were quite small.

Take my friend some flowers.

Write a note on the desk of another.

Remember to send a card of thanks so one doesn’t feel forgotten.

I received a lot of joy from those small acts of obedience. I guess I got into a rhythm after awhile. Moved by the Lord and got moving, right?

I am so glad I’m learning the power behind the small “yes”. I discovered on a trip to India recently that the small yes can lead to a miracle.

I’ll let my friend, Suz, tell you all about the night her and I recently followed Jesus when He said, “Come with me.”

Here’s Suzie:

It was the end of a long day.

We had just left a literacy class located in a slum in South Central India. I (Suzie) was overwhelmed at what God had just done in that small room.

It was after 10 p.m. It was still over 100 degrees.

I wish I could describe the traffic we were in, but a giant game of Chicken doesn’t accurately define the thousands of pushing, shoving match of cars, buses and scooters.

“Is it possible that we could go one more place?” one of the MI team asked.

He had a friend whose wife was ill. She was at the hospital undergoing chemo and would be home in 45 minutes. It meant that our night would extend two hours, but as a cancer survivor I knew how desperately I needed encouragement years earlier.

“Sure,” I said.

My friend and Proverbs 31 Ministries sister and team mate, Lynn, instantly agreed.

We finally made our way to her apartment. We walked through the door. She sat in a chair, weak. She wore a night gown, a sea green scarf covering her hair, nearly all gone.

Our sweet friend in India

I sat across from her and told her my story. How I once was diagnosed. How I needed to talk to someone who had been through it. How God loved me and my family through one of the most fearful and hardest parts of my life.

She stared at my face intently.

“Are you Suzie Eller?” she asked.

Seriously. Did she just ask that?

“Yes. How do you know that?”

She put her hand to her mouth as the tears came. She told us that she reads the Encouragement for Today devotions from Proverbs 31 Ministries every day. She said that we had become friends, like sitting together over tea, as we loved Jesus together.

In a nation where Christianity is rife with subtle and overt persecution, this courageous woman loved Jesus.

She started naming members of the team, those who wrote. She looked over at Lynn and said, “You’re Lynn Cowell.”

She continued.

“I have often prayed that I could come to the United States and thank my friends.” She shook her head as more tears came. “How is it possible that God brought you to my front door in my lowest hour?”

The odds of meeting this women on this trip was 1 in 1.2 billion.

How big is God?

SO BIG.

How personal is God?

SO PERSONAL.

I had struggled with leaving the U.S. at an “inconvenient” time because of a book launch. God spoke to me that day through my new friend.

Following Jesus isn’t about our agenda. It’s not about whether it’s convenient. It’s discovering His heartbeat. It’s loving people. It’s seeing how He works, and how stepping into His footsteps leads us from the natural to the supernatural.

I still fall apart when I think of this moment.

God loved her so much that He stirred a few of us 8,000 miles away to come to India. We had a plan. We had a purpose, but so did He.

Her name is etched on the palm of His hand. He wanted to encourage this beautiful, strong woman of faith. I got to be a small part of that all because I whispered yes, when everything inside of me was saying no.

That’s the miracle I witnessed.”

This is our invitation to say "yes" to His invitation!

Today, I’m offering one give way of Suzie’s new book, “Come With Me; Discovering the Beauty of Following Where He Leads.” I’ll choose a random winner from the comments in today’s blog post. To enter, simply share one small yes Jesus might be asking you as He says “Come with me” in the comments section of the site below.  If you’re in a hurry, simply say: I’m in.

The winner from Wednesday’s give away is April V.! April, send me an email at [email protected] with your full name and address and I’ll get it right out to you!

  1. I have been asking this question for awhile. I am a teacher (Occasional Teacher) and everyday I see kids and teachers that God speaks to me about. Sometimes they need a smile or a hug or someone who will listen to them. I want to follow Jesus and go where He wants me to go.

    1. Being “in” with Jesus is the “sweet spot” in life.

  2. I am in…..Jesus speaks to my heart to help the 27 million men, women, and children in slavery today. Most in the sex trade. It sickens my heart what people can do to one another, but JESUS LOVES THEM ALL. i pray daily for the victims, the “johns”, the traffickers and the families of the victims for help hope and for God, Our mighty God to change hearts and set captives free.

  3. This is such a small thing, but every night, I do not do this and what I’m talking about is praying with my 10 year old son. I would like to read scripture with him and pray together and I am struggling to do it. I know I am being encouraged to do it and then at the end of the day, I’m tired and just want to get him to bed so I can go to bed. I would love to win this book:)

  4. Stacey A. says:

Wonderful, miraculous story of how God is at work and cares about each of us individually!

  5. nancys1128 says:

This post needed a tissue alert! What an awesome reminder to not listen to those still small nudges but to act upon them as well, instead of pushing them away due to our own agendas. Bless you both to the stars and back Lynn and Suzie.

  6. Deborah Johnson says:

I’m in! Jesus is there something you want me to do? I am listening

  7. I stepped out with Jesus. I been feeling the over whelming need to go back to school. I am a nurse with 18 years behind me and an associates degree. For whatever reason God has been promoting me to back to school. I work full time and we have 5 kids, I’m not sure what Gods plan is but I am walking by faith and terrified the whole time. I don’t want to fail and be a failure in the eyes of my husband and kids and I would like to go through this with giving grace to those who have to endure my crankiness. I am sure God has plans for this degree change but He sure isn’t letting me know yet. Stepping out in faith and terrified.

  8. I believe God is asking me to host a SetApart Girl simulcast in my city. Even though I have never done anything like this before, I will say “yes” to Him.

  9. Yes to you my Jesus….

  10. Crowding out all the no, and to supress all the “I can’t do,” I desire to say “YES”, without reservation to God’s will.To learn to do his will and be comfortable in uncomfortable situations.

  11. Cathi Nichols says:

I asked myself this question on the way to work. Doors are being closed and a few have been opened but only offering temporary options. I’m wondering what God wants to be my permanent option. These past two months have been full of stress and sadness but I know without a doubt God is using this to move me to a new place in my life.

  12. Jessika Michaelangelo says:

    I’m in!

  13. Jesus wants my husband and I to adopt. It has been on our hearts off & on since the birth mother decided to keep her baby girl at birth 8 years ago. After grief, life moved on, but the desire to adopt never permanently left. God gifted us with 2 biological children so I wrestle with God’s plan for us regarding children. Are we done having kids? We are getting older. It is so expensive. Then why does is weigh heavy on my heart. It has been easy to just put it on the back burner. I want God to use me and fulfill His purpose — I do not want the NO roots to take over.

  14. Marcia Whaley says:

I”m in – I just need to pause more and listen more.

  15. I just got goose bumps reading your article. It is so amazing how God works through us to bless someone else. My husband and I are in a new season with his job and trying out a new church. We are allowing God to lead us where He wants us but the struggle is there for me, getting to know these new people at this new church. As a huge introvert, this has been a difficult move. I am still following through with His lead but struggling through it. 🙂 Thanks so much for all the sacrifices y’all do to encourage us each day. Probably through hardships of your own, you push through and we don’t take that for granted. I pray God continues to use you to touch others and gives you the strength even when you think you have none. God bless you all!

    1. Lynn Cowell says:

I will embrace that prayer, Tonya!

My “yes” in this season has been to fill in for a maternity leave at Proverbs 31 Ministries. As a speaker and writer, I am used to working at home. I am used to quietly moving each day from my quiet time to writing to working on messages. This has been very different; getting up and needing to be in an office at 8:30. It has given me a lot more compassion for those who do this every day. I am not sure what my next “yes” will be, but Lord, help me to say it before You even ask!

      1. That is awesome. I was so excited to see you had read my comment, much less replied to it. 🙂
I am going to take your advice on placing that question where I can see it everyday! I pray your days are filled with new and exciting things as God shows you your next steps. It is good to sometimes step out into unfamiliar territory (as you did in India; man that would be so awesome) and see what is out there! Enjoy your days in the office atmosphere until your next “yes”!

        1. Lynn Cowell says:

          Thank you, Tonya! I will!

  16. Delores McPherson says:

    “I’m in!”

  17. Kerry Ann Prodorutti says:

    “I’m in!”

  18. What a wonderful story, it brought tears to my eyes. Of course, not my coworkers are probably wondering why I’m crying and grabbing Kleenex. 🙂

    1. Lynn Cowell says:

Take the opportunity and share it with them, Crystal! That might be your “something He wants you to do today”!

  19. Michelle O'Connor says:

We are in the process of a big move, from Muscatine, IA, to the Austin, TX area! God’s hand has and is all over this move! I know He will lead us to a new church family, friends etc.
My prayer now is that I listen to where and how I can serve Him in our new place!

    1. Lynn Cowell says:

Muscatine? I’m originally from Cedar Falls, but lived in Davenport before we moved to Charlotte. I know you’ll love Austin. I have been and it is a wonderful community. God’s got you, friend!

  20. I’m so in! What an amazing story! Thank you for sharing.

  21. I’m in! I love when I hear stories like this. Great reminder to act on the small tasks that God places before us!

  22. Polly Schneider says:

I need to say yes to God saying lay down your own agenda and care for my husband who has Parkinson’s and dementia. It is so hard I just feel overwhelmed sometimes. Lord, help me!

    1. Lynn Cowell says:

Oh Polly! I walked with my mother whiled she cared for my dad when he had cancer. It is a self-less and sacrificial place. Can I pray for you?

Lord, today, give Polly an extra dose of strength and unselfishness as she loves on her husband. Reassure her that you are with her. You see and she is blessing You through her “yes”. Amen

      1. Polly Schneider says:

Thank you, Lynn for your prayer

  23. I am writing this comment through tears streaming down my face. What a miracle you all experienced!! When we put aside our own agenda and say yes to God it opens us up for amazing Blessings that we could not even dream of!! God Bless!

    1. Lynn Cowell says:

Kathleen – that is my reaction each time I read it too! God so loved that precious woman that He gave …. His son and a huge dose of encouragement to her. THAT is the God we serve!

  24. Come with me . . . . End of the semester for me on campus. I keep asking the LORD for encounters with students. I had one this morning in the locker room before swim practice. Had another one, via text last evening. Thanking God for moving on my heart and growing me.

    1. Lynn Cowell says:

Thank you so very much for not just “doing your job”, but being His light and His voice to those most vulnerable, Dot!

  25. I’m in! Wonder what he wants me to do everyday! Praying for patience and a clear mind to hear his words and direction.

  26. I love hearing these stories because it is a great reminder of how God is in all the details of our lives. It reminds us all of how much He must love each one of us so much to orchestrate these small things. However each small thing is how He will encourage the whole world to trust in His amazing love. Thanks for sharing!

  27. Come with me…yes Jesus help me

  28. Amy Dowty says:

Continue to follow in little things, yesterday it was bringing a coworker dinner.

  29. What an amazing story ! God is so awesome ! ….I believe that God is working on getting my attention and helping me to slow down … Had surgery for a detached retina a few days ago and now I am home from work for a few weeks so I am able to spend more time in the word and praying …would love to regain the sight in my left eye but God is in control …praying that he will show me what He wants me to do next …think the book would be helpful as I can still see with my right eye, praise God ???

  30. Tiffany Harper says:

    I’m in!
I am so thankful God looks after even the smallest of details in my life. Just trusting that He’s got my future in his hands no matter what is refreshing and comforting. He’s been asking me to slow down and let him take control. Letting Him do that is a daily struggle.

  31. I love this! I took the opportunity to go on a mission trip to Kenya with my church. I always wanted to do so but money, timing, lots of mommy obligations, etc made me think not now. God cleared every thing so it was still surreal to me until I was on the plane.

    1. Lynn Cowell says:

Wow, Amy! Our God is incredible!

  32. I believe that God has been asking me to go on a journey of trus and faith with my current situation. I live in chronic pain and no pain medication works. I have undergone 2 steroid injections so far and am getting another one next week in hopes to stop the pain. I know through this all, God is working for good and for a purpose. I just have to let go of my desire to be in control and allow him to take the reigns.

  33. Dori Sheese says:

    I’m in! God Bless!

  34. I say yes to where He calls! Open my ears to hear even the smallest thing I can do.

  35. I’m leaving for Texas tomorrow and despite my hesitation, I know the Lord is calling me there to encourage my sister. May I find a joy such as you did in India to confirm God’s leading and His wonderful way of communicating to the Body of Christ.

    I’m In!

    1. An early welcome to Texas! I pray your sister is blessed and encouraged by your visit.

  36. I’m in
    I’m listening

  37. Marian Hindall says:

I’m listening to where God might be calling me to join the prayer team at my church. I have been encouraged by my life group. I’m so humbled that they would suggest this to me.

  38. This story blessed me so much. There are so many people that really don’t know how mindful God is of them and this just goes to show us how BIG and MIGHTY our God is. This encouraged me to delve deeper into more of God so that I can completely be in tuned with Him to give Him a complete yes. I hope that I’m able to win a copy of the book because this has truly been my struggle, putting my will down and totally trusting His will for me.

    1. Lynn Cowell says:

A struggling common for us all, Paulina!

  39. I’m in. Thank you for the encouraging story. God’s love never ceases to amaze.

  40. Jesus, Is there something you want me to do? Teach me to be still so I can hear your answer.

  41. This was so encouraging. I feel the nudging for God to help me bring cultural diversity to a church that could break the apathy amongst an entire town. My heart breaks at the division many churches have in their worship services in our town. It’s like Pharisees and tax collectors. I refuse to be that Pharisee, yet I grieve when I see others take on that haughty attitude…especially in worship. I see that God is placing me in situations and orchestrating things in such a way where I can help bridge this gap and it truly blesses me to see his hand at work. But truth is, sometimes I the idea of being “the vessel” can be overwhelming, but as you said how big is our God? So big! Thank you for reaffirming God’s truth today.

    1. Lynn Cowell says:

Powerful, friend! I know His heart is behind this!

  42. Madeline DiFraia says:

Jesus is asking me to trust him and let go of the things I am holding on to so tightly. Some days it is so hard .. But I am trying!!!

  43. Deanna Wiseburn says:

Write my story as a book. That is the Yes I hear so clearly in my life right now.

  44. I’m in, hard day at my special needs class.I am sitting alone at lunch with sleeping child. Your story gives me goose bumps, I’m in, thanks for the encouragement!

  45. Wow! This moved me to tears. How amazing is our God. I am in the midst of discerning God’s will for my life which would mean some hard changes. I know the plans God has for me will be so much better than anything I can do on my own. Thanks for posting this encouraging piece.

  46. Somehow you always hit me right where I am. Thank the Lord for that. I’m so thankful for you and what you share. Saying “yes” today, and trusting in Him no matter what that brings. 🙂

    1. Lynn Cowell says:

And somehow you always encourage me, friend!

  47. The Lord is asking me to lead a women’s Bible study, and even though I feel incompetent I will be obedient.

  48. Thanks for sharing about your God ordained visit. Come and follow Jesus means to me to be available for God ordained minutes. Come and follow me reminds of when Jesus was choosing His disciples. We are also Jesus disciples.

  49. Nancy M in NJ says:

What a great experience you shared with us today!

I wonder daily about Jesus and what it is He wants me to do with the life He has given me. I am trying to consciously thank Him each morning for all the gifts he has given me, and keep my eyes open for Him.

  50. I think Jesus is wanting my husband and I to do something with missions. It seems to be speaking very loudly to our hearts.

  51. Not sure what is next for me, but I do know that several times today, I asked the Lord to use me. Just felt the need to pray that. Love that this post affirms my prayer.

  52. What a blessing to hear about your trip to India. To God be the glory!
For a copy of your book, ‘I’m in’!!!!

  53. Michelle Henson says:

Oh my! I have chill bumps!! i love the post and I’m in!!!

  54. I believe the Lord is calling me to become a Leader with Healing Hearts Ministries.
    I’m in!

  55. I’m in–Loved this post!! Will be leaning in & listening to what Jesus wants me to do. The first thing that popped into my head; was the lyrics to the Just Breathe song “just breathe, come and rest at my feet and be, just be, chaos calls but all you really need is to just breathe.” Perfect word, my life has been hectic, hisband lost his job a month ago (he’s not a believer), I’ve got some health stuff going on (waiting on blood work for a diagnosis–see specialist again in July), two teenagers (self explanatory lol), newer job–ah—Just Breathe ♥️

  56. I’m in! Thank you for sharing your story! God bless you and all the other women at Proverbs 31 Ministries!

  57. We so often want the BIG things yet God continuously calls us into the ‘small’ – and we see the blessings flow if we keep our eyes open and our hearts attuned to His, listening for His still, small whisper saying ‘this is the way; walk in it’. So many times, God has used someone to speak a word of encouragement to me that I was desperate to hear. Father, use me to be Your encouragement to those around me.
Would love a copy of the book!

  58. I love love love this post- just being open to the possibilities – you never know what He has planned. Thank you!

  59. God really is an awesome God that even the most seemingly mundane things is still a necessary part of His overall plan in our lives. What a simple “Yes” to God’s calling became a large and necessary encouragement and support to someone we never realized is part of our journey, no matter how short that encounter may be. I cried through this post, not just because of reading the story, but because of how close to home this really hits me. I needed a reminder of how awesome and faithful and powerful our God is because I have been so consumed and exhausted with every day life that I have been just living day by day in monotony and longing. Longing that somehow life has got to be more than what I see…but at the same time, not seeing another path to take. Everyday coming home and feeling exhausted, knowing that I need to find rest in God, but somehow finding some other means of using my time, but doing the same thing day after day after day. Today, God led me to this post, to this story, because He knew it was time for me to start reaching for Him again. It was interesting because since last night, I had a large unshakeable feeling that something was pulling at me and would not let go. And this morning, the same exact feeling was there and I knew God had had enough of my stubbornness…and I cried while reading His word and I cried while reading this story and I cried knowing that God has not given up on me even when It feels like He should have every reason to. Thank you so much for continuing your faithfulness in your journey so someone like me can find the encouragement to live day by day in God’s presence and allowing Him to call on me and knowing I will hear His voice so I can heed his calling.

    1. Lynn Cowell says:

Beautiful, Karen! Thank you so much for sharing!

  60. What a beautiful reminder of what an awesome God we serve.

  61. Hoping I’m not too late to be “in” for the drawing. I got my copy of the book just the other day in the mail & have already dived in. Would love to win a copy to give my sister who is just beginning to dip her toes in discovering Jesus.

  62. What a beautiful story!!

  63. Small yes today to choose to seek you and not my agenda. To love others and follow in Jesus footsteps.
    Thank you

  64. He’s asking me to look at the gifts He’s given me – to relish in them. As a working mom to five kids, a wife, friend, and daughter, it’s easy to let life just “happen”, but Jesus is asking me to really let it sink in that what I have been given by Him are gifts, not to be taken for granted in the busyness of my life.

  65. Chris Graham says:

    Dear Suzie and Lynn,
Thank you for your beautiful post. I live in Baton Rouge and we are watching the remarkable process of the healing of our beautiful city. The task is so overwhelming and the journey will involve a long process. It has changed me forever from the inside out. It is beautiful people who have listened to God and who have lovingly answered his urging them to come to our rescue. I want to be the person who listens to His voice. Our world is hurting and I want to be a reflection of how much Jesus cares.

  66. I’m in!!!
I lost my job in February to due excessive absences b/c of extenuating family situations. God took care of things we didn’t think possible so that I could remain home with our children and I could recover mentally from all that had happened.
Now I wonder if I’m meant to be home or “need” to find another job even though I WANT desperately to remain home.
Seeking & Waiting for His guidance

  67. God is moving our family of five across our state to a new home, new job, new schools, etc. Everything will be new. I’m anxious about the details but God’s hand has been carrying us. I want to be all in, even when I just want to stay exactly where I am. Change can be so so hard but we are trusting Him!

  68. Amanda Farley says:

Really needed to read this this morning! Thank you for sharing this story with us!

  69. Moved across the country to be with my husband leaving my children, grandchildren, church and friends behind because God said so. Yes Lord.

  70. Thank you. I have enjoyed your Tough Talks for several years. I feel a nudging to start a group of teens on Wednesday nights. Please pray that I hear God clearly as I am concerned I may be too old for the teens to relate to me. Again, thanks.

  71. Melissa V says:

Our family has been facing changes after a new boss came and fired my coaching husband. Despite the rejection and hurt I feel, God is telling me to still love (show love) to the “boss” and family and best friend that took my husbands job. Every part of me is saying “I don’t want to” but the part of me that wants to be obedient is saying yes.

  72. Mitzii Roughface says:

One of the things I struggle with the most in my walk with Jesus, is having the courage to follow the yes. I’m more than willing to say, but find fear gripping me tightly while awaiting His answer to “Is there something You want me to do?”

One of the more recent yes moments I can think of is when I sent an IM to a friend here at work real early one morning, just letting her know I’m thinking of her and miss working so close to her. She asked me at the end of our conversation “How did you know I needed to hear this today?” That is when I realized I had followed one of His yes’. Not only did I allow Him to work through me to make her day brighter, it made mine brighter too. 🙂

  73. I love the way God works in our lives! As I walked in the door to my office this morning I was asking the Lord what he wanted me to do today, and then I pull up this devotional! God is so good, and I would love a copy of the book.

  74. Debbie Wright-Diaz says:

If I lay very still and quiet, I ask Him to speak to me. One morning he brought to mind an old friend who I had not spoken to in about a year. I reached out to her and she was going thru a rough divorce and needed an ear. Thank you Lord, for the times I am obedient and still to listen for your voice.

  75. I’m In. My yes would be to write the book of my story….only as of yet God has not revealed the vision for it.

  76. Graceanna Henderson says:

I love when Jesus sends me on little adventures to bless others.

  77. Christina says:

WOW!! What a great and inspiring story!! God often speaks to me and puts women/young girls that need prayer. Sometime I obey and sometimes I don’t because fear comes over me. I know that God wants me to minister in this area and I just need to say “YES” and do it at all times. I need to take that step of faith and do it.

  78. I think God is asking me to pray for and to be more patient and understanding of my dad, who is getting older and is not the most sympathetic person to the pain and turmoil I am going through on a daily basis. Even though my dad cannot be there for me in my struggles, God wants me to be there and supportive of my father.

  79. Dori Sheese says:

Wonderful story! Even if I have read it before! I’m in!

  80. I love this post! Thank you so much for sharing! One thing the Lord has been putting on my heart is to spend more time with Him each day and worshipping.
I have been asking Him each day, What is your assignment for me today.

  81. I’m in!! I ask this question every day as I enter my workplace. Is there something you want me to do? Is there a prayer I need to pray. Is there someone I need to speak with? My company is in turmoil right now and I never know what I am walking into. I am blessed to have Jesus by my side to help me and those I work with to get through our day. Thank you for sharing this post.

  82. Jesus spoke to my heart a few months ago to do dinner at the shelter. Then we were led to the women’s shelter. We met quite a few women who are on a difficult journey – abandoned, abused, depressed, under addiction, etc..
Some alone and some with children. It broke my heart because I was once abandoned before in and similar situation. My family and I have compassion for them and shared not only a hot meal but Jesus with them and prayed for them. We are going to start a bible study with them in a couple of weeks. I am excited to see what The Lord going to do through our obedience and looking forward to bless these women.

  83. Donna Larue says:

Jesus has spoken to us multiple times on opening up our home to allow some of our church bus kids to spend the night. One time it was 3 brothers for 3 weeks. Recently I spoke with their mom and she told me that they would never forget that. I told her we were the blessed ones. I think Jesus keeps asking me to step outside my comfort zone and be stretched in Him!

  84. Denise Grandolfo says:

I went to a conference recently where the speaker challenged us to look our children in the eye, tell them we love them and then pray a blessing over them. I have been in the habit of quickly texting them “Bless you” in the morning’s rush to get to work.
I am saying “yes” to Jesus to stop and look them in the eye and pray a blessing over them. The looks on there faces as I have done this so far has been a blessing to me.

  85. Awesome read, Lynn! I have been feeling a nudging to start a woman’s group in my church, which is in a state of turmoil right now, and in the searching stages for a new pastor. I love Suzy, too, and would love to read her book!

It’s wonderful to see how the Lord moves when we are open to His call. I’m so glad you got a chance to unite with the sister in India who is battling cancer. God knows our hearts. I’m praying that God will give me opportunities to go where He leads, no matter how inconvenient or what happens. Through obedience to His leading we can experience His joy and peace.
