Make Any Day a Special Day

Everyday Confetti_cover

Birthdays, Christmas, Easter…

Sometimes these special days are just too far between. Too far apart to celebrate the good God is doing in our lives and the good in the lives of those we love!

This past year, I tried to do a better job celebrating more often. These included: celebrating Mariah’s last day of high school with party hats and balloons at breakfast and her first “well-done” college grades with a pedicure and lunch out! Sometimes, though, I feel like I run out of ideas.

That’s why I love the new book by my friends Karen Ehman and Glynnis Whitwer, “Everyday Confetti”.  First of all, I LOVE the cover so much, I have been displaying it in my kitchen every since it arrived! The beauty says, “Open me!”

I just love the way it’s organized too! While I have been reading it from front to back, the chapters make it simple if I want to head right toward the ideas I need now! Ideas to celebrate baptisms, a great game or showing kindness to a neighbor. Karen and Glynnis help when we want to reach out and show we care during hard times.

My favorite part: their suggestions are simple, doable, and stress-free.

With Valentine’s Day right around the corner, I can’t wait to get my “love” plans in the works! Wouldn’t you like new ideas too?

You can get a feel for just how helpful this book is! Check out their website for all kinds of ideas FREE!

I am so excited to be able to give one of you a copy of “Everyday Confetti”. To enter to win, just share in the comments below your favorite way to celebrate a special day. If you are too busy, just comment, “I’m in!”

  3. Dear Lynn,
One of my fears as my husband and I navigate the final stages of our divorce is that I know I am no longer going to be able to give my children a lot of the really fun things they’ve been privileged to have all their lives. My income after the divorce is not going to allow for trips skiing, scuba diving, all the fun stuff we’ve been so lucky to do. I know that my husband is still going to be able to do these things with my kids. It’s hard.
This book could help. Maybe I can give them celebrations from the heart and often, and “life with Mom” will be just as awesome as when they’re living “life with Dad.”
One of my favorite ways to celebrate a special day is my son likes a triple layer birthday cake! It’s a bit of work to make it, but it’s always worth it to see the smile on his face!

Shelly, I have walked with my best friend through divorce. She has these same fears early on. I don’t know how your future will proceed, but in her case, the “special” moments will Dad didn’t last long. Not that I want that for your children, but they will see the consistency of your love that doesn’t have a high dollar price tag on it!

Yesterday, when my daughter came home from school, I had a snack with her favorite foods from Aldi – soft cookies, an Arnold Palmer drink and chicken. Total cost: under $5. She thought it was amazing because I thought to buy her favorites.

They will remember these small things and it speaks, “I love you because I know you and what you like!” and it doesn’t have to be big!

One thing that my husband and I do with our children 6, 8, and 10, is we do a Valentine’s day dinner. My husband is a personal chef and I LOVE to cook. We plan a wonderful meal and put the same touches that we would is it were a date for us. Sparkling grape juice and chocolate covered cherries or strawberries to finish the evening. Brooke, Braedon and Benjamin love it and look forward to it each year…

    1. Lynn Cowell says:

LOVE this! Especially as kids get older, Valentine’s Day can come with a lot of pain of rejection. Keep this up, Lisa!

  12. I am all about simple and stress free! I would love a copy of the book. My son’s birthday was Tuesday. He turned 12! Each member of our family (me, my husband, my older daughter) each had lunch with him at school on different days. He loved it so much, he asked who was eating lunch with him today. LOL

  13. I’d love to learn more ways to make every day special. I get so caught up in the day to day things that special times can slip by. That being said, I do try to make sure each of my 6 children gets a special boost in a way that is important to them when they least expect it.

  14. I’m in! My son get baptized in a couple of weeks, and I’m ready to celebrate!

    1. Lynn Cowell says:

They have a great idea of having a baptism party using elements that reflect the purpose of baptism.

  15. I love to be with my loved ones…so anything we do together is a blessing! Mostly we just hang out and enjoy each others company as the little ones run around playing and laughing…..

Ever since my 3 children were little, St. Patrick’s Day was time for a wee bit of fun! “Lucky the Leprechaun” would make an “appearance” a few days before March 17th by creating messes around the house and leaving behind a trail of gold glitter. My two boys (now 19 & 22) would spend endless hours creating traps and keeping on the lookout! Top ‘O the Morning on the 17th, a trail of Lucky Charms would lead to their breakfast complete with green milk! Lucky would leave a wee note thanking them for all the fun and explaining his return to the woodlands in Ireland. Once Bailey (our baby now 14) was old enough to make her own traps, the boys were too mature for that old game, but to this day we still have green milk and Lucky Charms for breakfast on St. Patrick’s Day!

    1. Lynn Cowell says:

So cute! My mom always took me to McDonald’s for shamrock shakes. It was also a big deal because I went to St. Patrick’s church and school!

  19. Thank you, Lynn. I would love this book! I make my kid’s favorite meal and dessert for for their birthday, return home from college, new job…you name it. I love to make them feel special with a meal of their choice.

  20. I’m in! Thank you!

    I have a plate that says “It’s Your Special Day!” . . . . . . I don’t use it as often as I should!

    1. Lynn Cowell says:

I have that plate too Stephanie!

  22. Wow! I love the idea behind this! I love to party and celebrate just about anything. This would probably help me “tone down” as I tend to let myself get carried away. This would probably give me ideas and keep me grounded while still celebrating my loved ones. Thanks ladies!!!

  24. I love to celebrate too….Birthdays are big for me and I always try to do something special. I am running out of ideas so this book would be great…also I would like to find ways to celebrate my husband and make him feel loved…

  25. Years ago, my mother gave me a “Celebration” plate that says, “This is Your Day, Celebrate.” We use this at mealtime for just about everything good that happens. It’s that special touch! I would LOVE this book. I am a huge fan of both Karen and Glynnis!

  26. My kids love having their bedroom doors decorated on their birthdays. Even though I have a tween and a teen, they still look forward to celebrating this way every year!

    I’M IN!!!!!!!!!!!

  29. LOVE Karen Ehman! A few years ago, I read A LIFE THAT SAYS WELCOME, and I still refer to it often. So many ways to make your home and your life usher in the hospitality we all crave.

  30. MY FAVORITE WAY TO CELEBRATE IS TO GATHER WITH AS MANY FAMILY MEMBERS AS POSSIBLE FOR AN EXTENDED TIME OF FELLOWSHIP — AT LEAST TWO HOURS.

  31. I’m not always good at doing little things, but I certainly appreciate when others do it for me. I just had my 50th birthday and my daughter took 50 mini Reeses PB cups and attached 50 reasons why she loves me to them. Not expensive, but so thoughtful. That’s the kind of thing I like the most. This book may give me tips to pay it back to others.

  32. So fun! I would love to win a copy of this book. We have a “Let’s Celebrate” dry erase board on the kitchen counter where we notate special events and happenings.

  33. Any kind of meaningful one-on-one time together. I’m a big quality time kind of girl. 🙂

  34. I love heart shaped muffins for breakfast on Valentines Day and I love the fact that my husband buys valentines just from him for our girls. Makes them feel so special!

I have the kids pick a special meal for me to make for them. We also have a guest book (like the kind for weddings where the guests sign in). We use it anytime we have dinner guests, whether it is kids friends or family friends, everyone dates, signs and writes a note. It is really fun to look back and remember special evenings we’ve had with friends over the years. It also is a good reminder if we haven’t had company for a while -I can see how long its been – and plan some hospitality !! I would really enjoy this book, and thank you for your wonderful blog and work on behalf of all our girls!

    1. Lynn Cowell says:

I love this book idea, Christine! A beautiful way to record special and every day times!

  39. Our daughter works very hard in school. So each time she receives her report card we take her out for dinner to her favorite restaraunt to celebrate her accomplishments.

  40. Christina says:

Years ago I bought a “It’s Your Special Day” plate. We use this primarily on each family member’s birthday but we also use it when something special has happened. One birthday I actually forgot to get it out for the meal. The birthday boy didn’t forget! He went and got it himself! As my kids are older and getting into college, I actually found some “special day” plates that I have given them on their first birthday after college. I hope the tradition continues!

  41. I need to commit to doing a better job at celebrating & being more involved mentally with my daughters’ achievements. But I’M IN!!

  42. I like to give my family a special meal at their favorite treats for a day of celebrating my love for them!

  43. We celebrate just about everything:) as others have mentioned I let my family pick out their favorite meal on their bday-this includes dessert, of course:) Also, being Irish we celebrate St P day in March. We wear green and we go out together as extended family and have fun eating laughing and making memories. We even do things for the small things in life-like a child learning to stay dry through the night or no more fingers in the mouth at night -all of that calls for some fun also-celebrate life b/c it passes all too quickly…blessings to you Lynn and all at P31!

  44. Alicia Shawhan says:

We always try to do a special family treat or meal. Now that my girls are starting to get older and understand more, special dates with mommy or daddy. Friends and family always have a special note or treat. We LOVE celebrations around a here. I can tend to go overboard so nice and simple easy ideas are always welcome in this Pinterest world. Thanks for posting this! It’s right on my heart always.
