Miracle on Cross Country Road

His voice was shaking as he said my name. “Mom, I’ve got some bad news.” When your teen son says those words scary things of the worst sort run through your mind. “What happened?” I asked, not really wanting the answer.

Zach’s exams at his mountain college were postponed due to the thigh high snow. (Snow I wish I could have seen!) His professor posted the exam online to be downloaded, completed and returned. Zach did exactly that and then went on winter break…in every sense of the word.

Now three days later, he discovered his horrible mistake. He had sent his exam in on a Mac program; his professor only reads Word. She had given him twenty-four hours to resend it or receive a zero. He missed the deadline.

Pulling up his final grade, the D+ crushed his freshman spirit.

“Come home. Resend the paper. Email and beg for mercy.” was my advice. Then, I began to pray.

Merciful Jesus that He is gave Zach a second chance; the professor accepted his exam late.

As Zach shared the good news at dinner last night, I was so excited! God is so good! I wanted to jump up and down and yell, “Thank you Jesus!”. Instead, I calmly said, “That is so great Zach. I prayed for you.”

The shepherds this morning gave me perspective I needed. “The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.” Luke 2:20 NIV

A natural reaction to seeing Jesus; returning glorifying and praising God. They didn’t contain it. They didn’t package it nicely. They didn’t worry about what others would think. They glorified and praised God.

Maybe like me, you sometimes worry about what your kids think of you and your faith. On more than one occasion, I have heard my children describe me as a Jesus Freak. Some days, I carry my faith lightly around them, trying not to be “too much”. I struggle to find what the world may label as balance when it comes to attributing every thing that happens to Jesus.

But for those of us who love Him, isn’t everything about Him? For those of us who are flipped out, madly in love with Him, isn’t He the very air that we breathe? How can we not attribute everything to Him?

Jesus, forgive me for restraining when You call me to praise. Today, let me take my cue from those shepherds in the field, keeping their watch by night. When I see You today, and I will for You are every where, every day, like the shepherds, may I return glorifying and praising You. I love you, sweet Jesus. Amen

  1. Thank you for sharing this today. My dd, who is 11, called me a Bible freak last month. I decided to take it as a compliment and just pray that I'm modeling something she'll surpass someday.

  2. Ann, As my kids have pointed out to me, many say they are Christians but their lives aren't different. May our "difference" win our children over!
