Moments with a Wanna Be Mountain Girl

The eighteen-wheeler of my life rolled through Proverbs 31’s She Speaks conference and kept right on going straight through a week of “Brain Station” camp with my kids. It was something they needed and I needed too, yet buckling down with more learning for this I-don’t-like-to-sit-still girl was beyond hard. I could see the truck’s destination ahead: a weekend of respite away from the schedule and the heat in the mountains. It just couldn’t arrive fast enough!

Ahhh…Friday was here at last! Arriving at our destination a couple of hours early, I unloaded the pick-up and began my mom-even-while-away chores: getting the kids settled, figuring out dinner and locating the nearest grocery store. With everything in place, but no husband still in sight, I chose a country rocker to be my spot to embrace the Blue Ridge view. As I felt the wheels of life come to a slow then a stop, I heard a gentle tune. When we arrived, the sound of Native American music quietly lofted from some unknown location. Now, as my heart began to engage God in the wonder of His creation, I heard the strings playing a song from my youth, “As the deer panth for the water, so my soul longth after thee. You alone are my heart’s desire and I long to worship Thee.”

My heart stopped. Could I be hearing right? I closed my eyes to soak in the instruments singing their praise to the amazing Creator. Opening my eyes again, afraid to miss even one second of this incredible encounter, I glimpsed a hawk, gliding across the cloudless Carolina sky. No cares. No worry. A hawk, just soaring, doing what he was created to do.

The presence of the Creator quietly touched me there and I felt a tear slip down my cheek. What love; the kind that whispers to me in a way that I can hear and reassures me that He is God. He calls me to be like the hawk. No flapping. No struggling. He calls me to find His current; His pulse of what He is doing in the earth. He calls me to enter into His Spirit, where there is peace and strength to soar.

Lynn what a beautiful post. I can imagine the peace of God you must have felt. I can imagine the beautiful scenery of the mountains. The beauty you experienced is the same beauty I experienced when I went camping and had a chance to be by myself and just listen to all the diferent birds. Such wonderful peace. I know the song you mentioned hearing and what a perfect song to hear in the peace and quiet of the mountains.
