{Give Away Day} – A Chain of Courage

Let's create a chain of courage, ladies!

Without the action from one courageous woman the action of the next would not have been possible.

If you are joining me here today from Proverbs 31 Ministries’ Encouragement for Today, welcome! Let’s continue to connect, ok? It’s easy! Just sign up to get my posts automatically by clicking here.

I’d also love to connect with you more on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Pinterest too!

Did you find the courage we talked about in Encouragement for Today, inspiring? I so did! Reading about others who are courageous makes me want to step up and do the same! As I shared the chain of courage with my daughter, Mariah, she pointed out something very powerful: without the action from one courageous woman the action of the next would not have been possible.

If the midwives in Exodus 1 were not courageous in defying Pharaoh’s edict, Moses’ mother, Jochebed, would not have had the opportunity to hide her new born boy, Moses, in the Nile. Her Hebrew boy would have been dead. End of story.

If Jochebed had not courageously hid Moses, Miriam would not have been bold enough to speak to Pharaoh’s daughter. There would have been no need. No reason for her to step out.

If Miriam would not have been courageous and spoken to Pharaoh’s daughter … who knows what would have happened to the millions of Israelites Moses was chosen by God to lead out of slavery.

But they were.

They took steps of bravery, making it possible for the next woman to be brave.

One act of a courageous woman can open the door for another woman to be courageous.

I’ve been pondering on this chain reaction and thinking of so many women in history who were courageous and opened the door for others.

Harriet Tubman, (interestingly called “Moses”), lead approximately seventy slaves out to freedom during the Civil War and became the first woman to lead an armed expedition in the war. Her name was feared by slave owners because of her courageous acts.

Women, like Harriet Tubman, who were a part of the abolition movement sparked the suffrage movement for women’s right to vote and own property, making a way for you and I to be able to vote this November.

Catherine Booth, co-founder of the Salvation Army, led the way for women to be able to publicly share the gospel.  Her act of bravery opened doors for women coming behind her to be able to live out the calling the Holy Spirit had poured into their lives as well. Catherine Booth opened the doors for me and you to publicly speak, sharing the Word of God as He stirs His words in us.

I could write posts all year long of the courageous women who have gone before us, opening doors so that we can have the opportunity to be brave and make a difference in our world at our time.

One of my life joys is watching my daughters as they become part of this chain reaction. Mariah, a social work major, is passionate about seeing laws changed when it comes to rape in our country, especially rape on our college campuses.

My youngest daughter, Madi, has a heart to use her own struggles to help women reach past their insecurities, difficulties and struggles to reach their fullest potential.

How about you, friend? Where will you take a step of courage, in the footsteps of women who have gone before you?

Me?

Let’s be brave together, friends. God has more for us when it comes to seeing and sharing His glory with others through our lives. Keep the chain of courage going on and on and on until Jesus says to each and every one of us, “Well done, good and faithful servant.”

Today, I’m giving away this beautiful print to remind you to walk in faith. I keep mine right above my stove in my kitchen as a daily reminder not to look at what I see, but instead to God’s promises.

We walk by faith, not by sight. 1 Cor. 5:7

To enter to win, comment on the blog, an area where you want to be brave and walk in faith. If you are busy, simply say, “I’m in!” (Only those comments posted on the website will be put in the entry).

  58. God blessed me to be the adoptive mom of three young boys with special needs. Attachment disorder, learning disabilities, brain damage from drug affects, and mental illness are things that are now part of our lives as we grow as a family. Our current situation is unpredicable and overwheling as my youngest is progressing in an unpredicable and intense mental illness we can’t seem to get a diagnosis or help for. My hope is in the only One who knows and loves him even more than I do. I can’t afford to let my fear of our future shape my reactions to him now. I know God chose me to be his mom, and I know God wants what’s best for him even more than I do.

I want them to see Overcoming, sustaining, Joyous Faith. I want them to Know God is someone to be trusted every minute of every day.

  65. I so needed this today. I am a post abortive woman. I had an abortion at 17 years old. For years I have lived in shame and fear. 30 years to be exact. This time last year Jesus redeemed me. He has completely healed me and has called me into a ministry mentoring pregnant teens. Lately, I have been feeling the call the speak publically to women and speak of God’s amazing grace and the hope only He can give. I am speaking tonight to a group of 25 women at a local church. 77. Alicia Wilder says:

I needed this today – I’ve had a terrible week where what I thought was a close friend and mentor plead guilty to some horrific crimes. This affected my whole family, as we were all close with his family. I really doubted myself and my faith that someone in the ministry could do such a thing, and spent most of this week curled up in a pity party, afraid to face it head on. Today I read this and suddenly realized that firstly, this isn’t about me, but secondly I needed to be brave and realize that I needed to step out and help others who are also dealing with these types of things. Even if I don’t win, I really appreciate the message you shared and thank you so much for helping me out of this dark spot!

Following God’s direction is not for the faint of heart! He nudged me yesterday to speak to a person with whom I haven’t had the greatest history. That’s what I get for praying for courage. He empowered me to step out in faith and be vulnerable. I knew it was Him the moment the challenge arose. So, I am praying for the courage to continue to pray for growth, knowing that, because of His great love for me, God always answers those prayers with a ‘yes!’

  80. Brittany F says:

I’m in! This devotion was exactly what I needed to hear today. My younger sister has been facing one of life’s toughest battles – a custody battle – and she has been in a constant state of fear for the past few months. I too have been so FEARFUL of what the potential outcome would be… To be honest, I’ve been a worry wart instead of a prayer warrior. But just as Deuteronomy 31:6 says, God goes with us. He will never leave us and He is in control. I forwarded the Proverbs 31 devotional to her and we’ve made a pact to be less fearful and more courageous. We are going to put on the armor of God and let Him fight our battles. Please pray for her. Please pray that God’s will be done in her and her son’s lives. Thank you!!

    1. Lynn Cowell says:

Jesus, Brittany and her sister need a miracle. As they lean on You for courage, fill their hearts. Help them to slam the door on fear so faith can find a way to take root. Amen!

      1. Brittany F says:

Lynn, You just brought tears to my eyes. God knew exactly what I needed today. Thank you for petitioning the Father on our behalf. I signed up for your blog posts just now and I look forward to being filled with the Spirit by your words of encouragement. I sincerely thank you for the work that you are doing. May God bless you and keep you and yours!

    2. Melissa S says:

      Brittany,

I went through this trial a few months ago and it was the most debilitating time in my life but I prayed to God daily that I wouldn’t respond in a manner that wouldn’t please Him. My nights were long and lonely and it causes you to look at every flaw as a mother but God brought me through it. May the Lord watch over the child(ren) and bring peace and calmness to all those it has taken a toll on.

  81. My mother is fighting against stage 4 metastatic breast cancer. The battle began a year ago when she was nearly paralyzed due to breast cancer spreading to the bone on her spine. After a long surgery, rehab, and recovery we found out it was also in her hip and shoulder. She seemed to be improving but yesterday we found out the cancer is growing still and now has spread to her liver. She will soon begin chemotherapy and of course we’re anxious and saddened by the news of all of this. My encouragement to a friend the other day was “Don’t let the devil steal your joy! The glory is the LORDS, He has a plan.”. Those words came ringing back in my ears this morning as worry and sorrow filled my heart and mind concerning my own life. I laid it all at His feet and asked for courage to face each day with the strength that only He can give in times like these. My heart needed your words of courage today, thank you!

    1. Lynn Cowell says:

Erin – I am so very sorry. I, too, have had a parent struggle with cancer. It is heart breaking to see someone we love hurt so much.

Jesus, help Erin to see You in this situation that appears only dark and sad. You are God … no matter what. Help her to turn to You over and over and over again. Amen

    2. Dear Erin, I understand your pain and suffering, cancer can be terrifying! Both my parents passed from this horrific disease, three of my brothers had prostate cancer (all alive today) and my 31 yr. old son was diagnosed with brain cancer (he is doing great today!). During that challenging year, I would not have endured that season without the love and support of friends and family. MOST importantly, I came to depend more deeply on God’s Word and how He protects, provides and guides our every step. Please trust in God’s plan, I will be praying for your mother and your family. I want to share something else with you, I feel like God wants me to reveal this to you and WHY I came across this today! (I seldom read these blogs.) During this process with my son, I learned a lot about prevention and beating cancer through my own research, reading and watching documentaries. I don’t know if this will help, but right now, there is an excellent resource on Facebook, called “The Truth About Cancer.” Is a 9-part documentary on preventing and beating cancer with alternative and natural treatments. This is FREE to watch. PLEASE, don’t misunderstand, I’m not suggesting this is the way to go for your mother, but merely…’to offer’ there are other options available. God bless!

      1. Lynn Cowell says:

Thank you so much for sharing, Kat!

  87. I am at a place in my life where I want to step out of my comfort zone. I had been praying for God to show me what he wanted from me in my life. Almost a year ago we went on a mission trip to his a vbs for impoverished children. That really touched day heart. Aa fee months after that I was asked if ever if I was asked if I would pick up and go to help plant a church in another state that is one of the most unchurched stares in America. I prayed and immediately said yes. We are still deeply praying about it but have taken one visit trip already and are fixing to take another. Please pray for God’s guidance and wisdom.

    1. Lynn Cowell says:

Lord, please give clarity to Kecia on whether or not to move to be a part of the church plant. You have given her gifts and talents. Help her to see where she can have the biggest impact on Your kingdom! Amen

  95. I’m in! I definitely need a dose of bravery! I just found out I am pregnant at 40!?! My husband is thrilled, our 13 year old and 10 year old sons are happy too. I am the one struggling with God’s plan. We just moved into our new home, a remodeling project. I am surrounded by boxes and daily fears. I’m a 40 year old expecting mother, whom had gestational diabetes and pre-eclampsia at 27 so 13 years later I am beyond nervous.

I am so glad I saw this blog post today, Proverbs 31 Ministeries always seems to hit home for me.
    TODAY, I WILL BE BRAVE!

    1. Lynn Cowell says:

Lisa – you are brave! You can know for sure the Father knew you were the one to bring this child into the world. Lord – Your name is Jehovah Rapha, our healer. We pray over Lisa’s pregnancy and ask You to have each part of her body and pregnancy go well. We say no to gestational diabetes and pre-eclampsia and yes to health for our sister! Amen

  96. I want the courage to move forward in my faith as I have been stuck for awhile. I’m in.

  101. I want to be brave and walk in faith in my church, when my pastor asks me to lead a group, I want to step up and walk in faith, rather than shy away and tell myself I’m not equipped!

Thank you, Lynn! Love your words!

  102. Thanks for this today Lynn – and thank you for being courageous, for all of us reading it!
I want to be brave in sharing the gospel more. I do share but I am sometimes at a loss for words. I need to hear more from His Holy Spirit to hear the words that I am to speak…and that it’s Him and not me.
A perfect verse too! It’s the essence of our walk with Him.
    Blessings!

  103. I want to be courageous when it comes to dealing with my chronic pain.

  104. Diane Wenger says:

I’m in! I want to be courageous in continuing to step out of darkness from satan’s ugly lies and rise up and walk in newness of life each day. I want to speak truth in love to my 8 children and my husband and pray fervently for our family to be set free from spiritual bondage.

  105. I’m in! I want to be courageous by sharing what God has done in my life! I want to give hope to women who might be lost, like I once was. I want to share the love of Jesus! I carried guilt and shame for so many years, even after coming to know the Lord, but that guilt and shame is covered by God’s amazing Grace, and that is the most awesome thing ever! I’m tired of being quiet, I’m in! 🙂 ❤

  112. Carol Noto says:

Need this reminder during the storm – I’m in.

  113. I have felt this “little push” to start a group for my mamas, a group to be uplifted, motivated and encouraged through the love of our Lord. I have been so reluctant, fearful, because I don’t have it all planned out or know where it’s going. I just know how important it is to take a few minutes out of my day to spend with Jesus, and I want to share that with other mamas in the trenches of pareting. I prayed about it this morning, and then read this… It’s time….

  117. I want to be brave in my finances and be willing to give without hesitation and trust that God will provide!

  118. To set God h honoring boundaries with my husband, and become more of who God wants me to be is my walk of courage

  119. Courage is such an admirable trait to have and if infused with faith can bring God’s light to the world. I am writing a book that is directed to young people and praying the words I use can bring a message of how to trust in God’s promises and have joy and security in knowing the Lord Jesus. This work in progress has been ongoing for many years and I have had moments of doubt and fear that nothing will come of it. The words you wrote in this message gives me courage and incentive to continue what I’ve started. It was God’s call that started my writing journey and must press on!

  120. Linda Richards says:

Having studied about the birth of Moses in the Bible over the years, I’ve thought about the danger, but never much contemplated on the issue of the great Faith and Courage that the midwives and Jochebed possessed in order to commit these great acts. Then Miriam, because of her mother’s training and the example “modeled, obeyed her mother’s instructions, even herself having Courage and Holy Boldness to approach Pharoah”s daughter on her baby brother’s behalf. Now at the age of 64, I pray as David did in Psalm 71 verse 18, “Now also when I am old and grayheaded, O GOD, do not forsake me, until I declare YOUR Strength to this generation, YOUR Power to everyone who is to come.” in JESUS’ Holy Name, Amen!

  121. Suzanne Welling says:

I want to have faith that my daughter who has been struggling with illness for over a year will be healed and will live a normal life.

  122. I must be strong and courageous, this is an overarching thematic season of my life. God has put numerous resources in my path, (including you Lynn) to strengthen me. Isaiah 58:11 says, “The LORD will guide you always; he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land and will strengthen your frame. You will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail.” I am so grateful for you and the team of Proverbs 31 ministries. When you grow weary of deadlines and the stress of life weighs you down, please know that you are making a difference.

  123. Lynn, this is just what I needed to hear and meditate on…fear has been jerking me around relentlessly this year. THANK YOU for such a beautiful reminder of those who have gone before us and for such a poignant battle cry as we move forward.

  124. I want to have courage to pursue adoption. I want to be bold in expanding the idea of a family. To teach my biological children that we are called to love others as we love oursel ourselves. To extend our live to those who have no family to share life with.

  125. Suzette Royal says:

Without faith it is impossible to please God! I want to please him by having faith to expand my business.

  126. shellie nikitenko says:

I want to be courageous enough to live every day for God and not the approval of man. I’m in!
