Praying for Boys

Praying for Boys

Like me, you might be a mother of girls AND a mother of a boy too! Many of you have contacted me for resources and websites like mine, but specifically for boys.

I am so happy to share with you a terrific new resource just for us!

“Praying for Boys: Asking God for the Things They Need Most” is just the resource us moms of boys need. Written by my new friend, Brook McGlothlin, co-founder of the MOB Society, Mothers of Boys, Brooke helps us target prayers specifically for the guys in our lives!

I had the opportunity to spend the day with Brooke just a couple of weeks ago at a Compel Training Day in our Proverbs 31 Ministries office. I absolutely love the heart God has given her to invest in her boys and help us to do the same!

Brooke & I

I wanted you to get a peak into Brooke’s heart and her passion to help us to pray every day for our sons. Here’s some questions she answered for me:

Brooke, your book is a prayer guide with over 200 scriptural prayers. Can you share a sample or two of these?

One of my favorite verses to pray for my own boys, that shows up in the chapter on kindness, is Numbers 6:23-26. They call it my “special prayer” and I pray it over both of them every single night. If I forget, they remind me, and I love that it’s become such an important part of the way we end our days. I just pull my boys close to me and pray, “May the Lord bless you, and keep you, and make His face to shine upon you, and give you peace.” We’ve been doing it so long now that they actually pray it with me. My other favorite verse to pray for my boys, because they’re young and still learning appropriate behaviors, is Galatians 5:22. I put my own twist on the end that they just think is hilarious. “Lord, fill up my sweet boys with love, joy, peace, and patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control…lots and lots of self-control.”

What do you most hope the readers of Praying For Boys gain from experiencing the book?

I wrote Praying for Boys because I truly believe we can change the world if we pray for our sons. My greatest hope for moms who read it is to inspire them to trust God with their boys, get into His Word and find out what it has to say about raising boys, and inspire a generation of moms to get on their knees, partnering with God for the hearts of their sons.

Praying for boys not only changes them, it changes moms too. How has it changed you?

Do you remember from grade school math that any time you change one part of an equation, it changes the answer? So for example, if you’re adding 2 + 3 and get 5, and then read the word problem again and realize you should’ve been adding 3 + 3, you can’t expect the answer to still be 5. Something changed. And when even just one thing changes, it affects everything else…changes everything else, even if just a little. Praying keeps me in the right place with God. Keeping my mind focused on the fact that He is God and I am not helps me put all of life in perspective, and it changes the way I live my days. Ultimately, spending time talking to God brings me closer to Him, and helps me know Him better. There’s no better way to be a better mom than to get to know God better, and listen to Him as He directs our paths. As we change, our families will change too.

Again, for those of us with girls AND boys, I have found when you pray scripture for your kids, God’s word applies to both sexes so you can’t go wrong! That’s why a book loaded with God’s word is just the resource we need to keep us praying for our kids!

Father, give Nykesha Holy Spirit inspired wisdom! When she is in dialogue with her son, give her words straight from Your heart. Draw Him to Yourself God. Lord, the enemy hates our sons. Win God! BE VICTORIOUS! Take their hearts of stone and give them hearts of flesh, soft toward You and Your blessed ways according Ezekiel 25. Open their eyes to the wasting of years they are committing. Do what only you can do, Father. We are desperate for your intervention! Amen

  7. My husband and I have 3 boys, 18, 15, 10. We also have 3 girls…but we’ll leave them out of this boys discussion. My boys need prayer to cover their life and this book sounds like an amazing tool to help me through intercession. There are so many things we want for our sons and most of all I want them to love God and serve Him all the days of their life. God’s ways are higher than are ways and His plans higher than our plans. I think this book would help me constantly remember God wants more for them than I can even think or imagine. So blessed to have these young men in my life!

My husband was not a Christian when we met and had not raised our older daughters with God… So naturally there is much Godly intervention to be had there to correct their lack of knowledge… I know God is in control and he brought me this family for a reason! I love them very much and we are all a work in progress!!!

  64. I’m praying for my son Noah(8). We had a big day yesterday. He told me that he had conquered one of his biggest fears. He is no longer afraid of a monster living under his bed waiting to grab him. As we were in his room he went into detail about how he went to great lengths to avoid this monster and also how he had come to conquer this fear. This was especially meaningful for me since I deal with a lot of fear myself. I held him in my arms and we prayed. I thanked God for how he helped Noah over come his fear. I prayed that we would both rely on he Lord to conquer every fear that we have. And then we both said 2 Timothy 1:7 together. Thank you Lord!
