Slowing Her for Sleep So You Can Get Some Rest

“Mom, I can’t sleep.”

On Sunday nights before a new school week or at the end of a whirlwind day, it was a phrase I heard often.

I imagine you do too, especially with an unfamiliar back-to-school on the horizon. Stress could be just one of the many factors impacting our children, stealing their sleep.

When my children were young, routines helped make going to bed predictable. Praying together, singing a song, or sometimes crawling in bed with them for a few minutes prepared them to drift off.

At some point, though, I needed to get my own rest. A mama has to get some sleep if she is going to be the best mama she can be!

On the easy days, parting wasn’t difficult.  Her eyes became heavy as her body unwinded. But too many nights, the fear of the dark or her stirred up soul just wouldn’t settle down.

So we tried something new: unwinding with a story. Stories not told by me, for I was past my point of giving. These were stories, spoken by another, told of God’s presence and love through the adventures of make-believe children. All three of my adult kids still quote these stories, laughing at how they remember the stories line for line.

This habit, of turning to truth and God’s word before going to sleep, still follows my youngest to this day. Just this week she shared how she woke up in the middle of the night from a nightmare and immediately turned on worship music to go back to sleep.

“In peace I will both lie down and sleep; for you alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety.” Psalm 4:8

Filling our minds with truth before we fill our bodies with rest is why we created audio devotions for you to share with your girl. After a long day when the body and mind are transitioning from running to resting, God’s word can prepare our children to receive the rest we all need.

The Loved & Cherished audio devotions, read by my co-author and professional counselor, Michelle Nietert, and myself, share a verse, a short story, and a prayer. These five-minute devotions can help your girl set her mind on how deeply she is loved by God, a truth her mind and heart can rest on the whole night through.

Audio devotions are just one of the free gifts you will receive when you pre-order your girl a copy of Loved and Cherished: 100 Devotions for Girls.
