Take a Long Drink

As I was sitting on the deck of the lake house we were staying at in the mountains, it was so quiet. The world had yet to awaken and it was serene. I heard a Canadian goose honk to some other geese. Then there was a chorus of honking. They closer they got to each other, to create their formation, the louder they got. They were encouraging each other to come along. Holy Spirit – make me that type of cheerleader. One who “honks” lovingly to those around me (especially those in my own household) to keep going; to come along. May I turn away from being harsh, impatient, quick to put down when a mistake is made. Remind me, that just like me, those around me grow best where grace flourishes.

That is exactly what Jesus extended to the woman at the well in John 4. Verses 1 – 26 share this well known story. Jesus asked this person for help. Seems like an unlikely conversation opener, but it worked well. “Will you give me a drink?” When the woman asks why He has asked her of all people, He responds with “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked Him and He would have given you living water.” v. 10

Jesus tells us it’s ok to ask Him for something, when He asks us for something. He asks me to be more patient and give more grace to my family. I ask Him for the patience, love and grace to give it away.

He calls me to share His heart with others. I ask Him to show me fresh each day, where and what His heart is to share.

Holy Spirit, like the woman, I need a long and deep drink today. I feel tired from the day to day life and I need YOU. I asked, not just for a long drink, I ask for you to put a spring in my heart today, so that it is continually overflowing with every person I meet today.

Take a drink – it tastes great!

  1. Isaiah 54:1, “Every one who thirsts, come to the waters;…”

I’m so thankful He allows us to be thirsty, so we’ll respond to our need for Him. I have been reminded of one of my most favourite quotes:

“O God , I have tasted Thy goodness, and it has both satisfied me and made me thirst for more. I am painfully conscious of my need for further grace. I am ashamed of my lack of further desire. O God, the Triune God, I want to want Thee. I long to be filled with longing; I thirst to be made more thirsty still. Show me Thy glory I pray Thee, so that I may know Thee indeed. Begin in mercy a new work of love within me. Say to my soul, “Rise up, my love, my fair one, and come away.” Then give me grace to rise up and follow Thee up from this misty lowland where I have wondered so long. In Jesus’ name. Amen.” A. W. Taking a long drink,
    Joy
