Tasteless

“Season all your grain offerings with salt to remind you of God’s eternal covenant. Never forget to add salt to your grain offerings.” Leviticus 2:13 (NLT)

This verse leaped off the pages. “Season all your…offerings with salt to remind you of God’s eternal covenant. Never forget…”

Immediately I searched for Jesus’ famous words: “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt looses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men.” Matthew 5:13 (NIV)

God said in the Leviticus passage that salt was to be a reminder of God’s eternal covenant, His eternal covenant that He is our God and we are His people. His eternal covenant to love us with unfailing, unconditional love.

Salt, the reminder in every offering, could represent our own gratitude. Our heartfelt thanks that we verbalize, not just feel. He has chosen us, when we were still in our sin. Though not worthy of His perfect love, He extended unconditional love and acceptance to us.

He then tells me I am the salt of the earth. I am the reminder to the world of God’s eternal covenant. My life is  a daily example and light to those around me of God’s unfailing, unchanging love. The question is: am I?

Or have I lost my saltiness?

My mom was recently in a hospital that specializes in the human heart. During her brief stay, she commented on how bland the food was. No salt. Salt is said to be bad for the heart thus tasteless food.

Bland.

Tasteless.

Wouldn’t it be discouraging if others described our lives this way? If we have lost our saltiness, if we have lost the desperate sense of our gratitude to our Rescuer, we are bland. Tasteless.

If we have lost sight that we are His special treasure, His prized possession, we lost it when we lost our gratitude, when we began to take this crazy, extravagant love for granted.

If we have lost sight of His eternal covenant – Hope Himself – where will the world see Him?

That is when faith and Christianity is worthless. That is when it is trampled by men. That is where we are in many places today. Polls show that Americans don’t see any difference between those who say they are His and those who don’t.

Friend, how do you taste? Is your life full of flavor because you are continually aware that the Creator of the Universe if flipped out madly in love with you? Does your face, your attitude, your actions shout to the earth, “I am the prized possession of the King of it all”?

That is the question I am asking myself this morning.

Lord, never let me forget to add salt to my offerings. My offerings of my life – every minute of every day, every breath I breathe. I want to change the world, Jesus.

Make me salty.

Lynn

  1. Such good thoughts as we prepare to celebrate Easter.

I've been praying over the last few months that my words and my life are always 'seasoned with salt'. Good post for me.

    Have a wonderful week,
    Kate 🙂
