Time to Get Moving {Give Away Day}

When the Holy Spirit is doing a work inside our heart, we need to take the next step and move in obedience.

God makes it very clear: His salvation for us is a free gift. There is nothing we can do to gain it. There is nothing we can do to loose it. For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing;it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.” Ephesians 2:8 – 8 (NIV)

Salvation is a free gift.

Blessings can also be a gift from God, but there are also scriptures that indicate that blessings can also come as a result of obedience.

Let’s look at this portion of God’s word found in Deuteronomy 28:

Deuteronomy 28: 1 – 2, “If you fully obey the Lord your God and carefully follow all his commands I give you today, the Lord your God will set you high above all the nations on earth. All these blessings will come on you and accompany you if you obey the Lord your God:”

I added the emphasis to this portion to draw attention to key phrases that speak of obedience: fully obey and carefully follow. These action phrases are followed with direct results: set you high above and all these blessings. God goes on to share with the Israelites what all these blessings look like:

You will be blessed in the city and blessed in the country.

The fruit of your womb will be blessed, and the crops of your land and the young of your livestock—the calves of your herds and the lambs of your flocks.

Your basket and your kneading trough will be blessed.

You will be blessed when you come in and blessed when you go out.

The Lord will grant that the enemies who rise up against you will be defeated before you. They will come at you from one direction but flee from you in seven.

The Lord will send a blessing on your barns and on everything you put your hand to. The Lord your God will bless you in the land he is giving you.

The Lord will establish you as his holy people, as he promised you on oath, if you keep the commands of the Lord your God and walk in obedience to him.  Then all the peoples on earth will see that you are called by the name of the Lord, and they will fear you. The Lord will grant you abundant prosperity—in the fruit of your womb, the young of your livestock and the crops of your ground—in the land he swore to your ancestors to give you.

The Lord will open the heavens, the storehouse of his bounty, to send rain on your land in season and to bless all the work of your hands. You will lend to many nations but will borrow from none. The Lord will make you the head, not the tail. If you pay attention to the commands of the Lord your God that I give you this day and carefully follow them, you will always be at the top, never at the bottom. Do not turn aside from any of the commands I give you today, to the right or to the left, following other gods and serving them.” Deuteronomy 28: 3 – 14 (NIV)

This is the type of blessings I want in my life; blessings that touch on every area – from my finances to my family.

Obtaining blessings begins with obedience.

So when we read God’s word, hear that stirring song, or listen to the stimulating sermon, we can’t just enjoy the feeling.

We can’t just be moved; we have to get moving.

Move in obedience.

  18. I’m in! I just love this passage of scripture! Sometimes though all of the blessings listed are often part of prayers, but what is left out is the first two verses about obedience. You can’t have one without the other.

    1. Lynn Cowell says:

Absolutely right, Julie! I am afraid too often we ask and pray for these blessings, but we skip over the conditional part.

Salvation is free. Always. Nothing can change that. But here in Deu. 28, we see that blessings can be conditional.

  67. “I’m in” Let’s just say it took me five of my sister’s years on the kidney transplant list and dialysis to hear God loud in clear that I needed to be her donor champion and search high and low for her live donor… I am still looking by sending articles to all our newspapers and news channels. Her article has come out in two small local newspapers thus far. Also doing stickers on the back of our car windows, asking for a kidney donor… I ask that all who read this hold Christy Lindsey , in Colorado, in your prayers to receive that kidney donor this year and save her life!!! Thank you 🙂 p.s. her whole family either has high blood pressure or diabetes, thus not being able to donate ourselves….

    1. Delores McPherson says:

Father God, you have heard the request of Kathy for a kidney donor for her sister Christy Lindsey. Right now I agree with her in Jesus name for this donor. You not only said that you would supply all our needs according to the riches of Christ Jesus but You said that if any 2 of us agree on anything in Jesus name You would do. I praise You now for the donor and for Christy. We give You and You alone glory for her healing and her life. May her story be told far and wide and bring You glory and bring others into the kingdom. In Jesus name and for Your glory. AMEN!

      1. Bless you Delores, I do feel a great peace with regards to God taking care of her 🙂

    1. Lynn Cowell says:

You know the really odd thing about this, Rachel …

We write our devotions 2 months before they are published. At the time I had submitted it, I was in the process of communications to give the needed funds to the family. By the time I got around to it, it was no longer appropriate.

Just today I was wondering how things might have turned out differently had I moved when I felt moved. I don’t know and I certainly can’t change it. I only know that in the future, I want to obey and obey on time.

  86. Cari Adams says:
