Trouble Sharing Jesus with Your Kids?

Share With Your Kids about Jesus

Tell me what you know about the faith of your grandparents? How about their parents?

Maybe like me that is not very much. I can tell you what denomination they were a part of, but their personal relationship with Jesus?

Honestly, since I never heard them talk about Jesus, I can’t truly say.

I sure want that to be different for the grandkids I hope to have one day and the place to start is with the kids I have today!

Psalm 78:6-8 encourages us, “so that a future generation — children yet to be born — might know. They were to rise and tell their children so that they might put their confidence in God and not forget God’s works, but keep His commands. Then they would not be like their fathers, a stubborn and rebellious generation, a generation whose heart was not loyal and whose spirit was not faithful to God.” (HCSB)

There it is: we are to rise up and tell our children all that God has done for us. This is not only so that they might put their confidence in God and build their lives of faith and hope on Jesus. It is also that that the future generation – those children not even born yet – might know about Him as well!

Sometimes, days, even weeks can go by without me having a real conversation with my kids about Jesus. It might be because we haven’t talked in awhile (they are all off to college). Other times it is because I have simply failed to share with my kids all that God is doing in my life and share with them what I am learning.

Sharing Jesus with our kids doesn’t have to be hard. Start with what He is doing in your life today.

  1. Amen! Such truth! I now share with some my grandchildren the awesome things God has done for me…the miracles and the blessings and how He is always there when we need Him. But I do struggle in talking about Jesus to my grandchildren that do not know the Lord yet. They are not taught of Him in the home or taken to church – yet. But I always pray that their parents will see their need for Jesus and take them to church. I do see God moving in their family now, and I know my God is faithful!
    Thanks for this!

I have had these thoughts, Susan, on how I would handle sharing Christ if my grandkids did not have a relationship with Him. I think I would do just what this scripture says. I will tell them what He has done for me. Period. That is powerful enough!

  2. Today I am taking on a demon. It is only my faith that is allowing me to move forward, out of the paralysis of fear.
I have a deadline of April 28th to turn in my Master’s Thesis. I have been unable to write for 2 months because of fear and insecurity. I decided to turn it over to God and pray. Today, I am at the computer writing.
When I am done, and turn the paper in, I will tell my children the fear and paralysis I felt, how I relied on my faith to get me past it, and how my faith did not fail me. It will be a strong testimony for us.

I love this, Shelly! What an amazing testimony … you were/are fearful, yet you and Jesus did this together with His power! WAY TO GO, friend!

  3. I was so blessed to be raised by such sweet grandparents who loved the Lord with all their hearts. My grandmother was always singing sweet hymns like “what a Friend We have in Jesus”, and her very favorite was “the Old Rugged Cross”. I was raised in a Swedish Luthern Church in Nebraska. I’m 67 & when I was a little girl, the service was in Swedish once a month for some od the older Swedes in town. My grandpa brought us peppermints & a pencil & paper so we could get through until Sunday School. My worst punishment was setting the buzzer to sit & think about what Jesus would think about what I did. What lovely, wonderful, precious, loving people they were. I left the faith during my 20’s & 30’s. My mother had remarried when I was about 10 & my sister & I were taken from that lovely home & moved to California. I know though, I would never have found my way back to God if it weren’t for my Grandparents. I learned so much about God, Jesus, the Bible. I got my first white Bible from my Grandma when I was 7. I was an avid reader. I memorized lots of Bible verses. Be a Grandparent that teaches your grandchildren about God.

Your testimony is so hopeful, Nancy, to know you walk away for a season, but your heart was drawn back again!
