Wednesday Wisdom Tip – When Your Child is Your Confidant

Ever get in a car full of people and they stop talking?

You can only guess what they were talking about.

Too often, it’s someone else.

Gossip; a topic we could talk about every Wednesday because it is such a huge issue for us girls.

Once again, I believe it comes back to us as moms and Proverbs is loaded with advice when it comes to our words:

“The words of a gossip are like choice morsels; they go down to a man’s inmost parts.” Proverbs 26:22

Some words feel so good when they come out; they can relieve anger, frustration, disappointment. Yet, that doesn’t make them good. As Proverbs 26:22 says, these words go down deep not only into our hearts, but into the hearts of our listeners.

This is especially true when it comes to words we speak about our kids to our kids.

As a mom, I try hard not to let the troubles of my day spill onto my kids, but some days they just do. My daughter will often ask me, “What happened?” Because she is so compassionate and a real human ear when I have been alone with my computer all day, it is just so natural to share with her. But this natural tendency to confide in my daughter, especially about another child’s issues, is bad for her and bad for me too.

See, the other child and I, we’ll get it worked out. Our differences will be resolved and we’ll move on, but, if I have lacked maturity and shared this with another family member, they now have an issue with them too!

God calls this “sharing” that we do as moms gossip. We gossip about our kids to our kids and it damages our relationships within our families. We tear them down rather than build them up.

If you are a stay at home mom or work from home like me and adult conversation is few and far between, keeping your tongue guarded is really hard. But the conversations we need to have, venting our frustration, pain and disappointments with our kids need to be turned to prayers to their Heavenly Father who can actually do something about the situation.

Before we talk to our kids about our kids, let’s make sure and run it by Father God; speaking only words of life and not words that hurt.
