Wednesday Wisdom Tip – What Do They Know?

Don’t they look fun? This is my group of girls I get to meet with each week, talk about life and how it centers around Jesus.

Recently, I had a very interesting conversation with one of them; a conversation that really concerned me.

“How could God let all those people go to hell?” she said. I could tell she was confused, and a little angry too. “I mean, when they get to heaven, if they didn’t follow Jesus on earth, God’s just going to throw them in hell? I don’t think he will. God’s just not like that. I think he’ll give them another chance.”

I can definitely understand her concern; we should all be concerned for those we know who are not following Jesus. That’s why we need to share and live it out in front of them.

Here was my biggest fear: she didn’t know what the Bible said. She was drawing her own conclusions based on what “felt right” to her and a conversation she had with her friends.

George Barna, a well respected researcher, has dubbed this generation the Mosaic Generation. Mosaics combine what they have learned, what they have taken in through media and how they feel to come up with a combination of their own truth. This is dangerous on more levels than this short post can take on. What concerns me most is that they truly don’t know truth.

I quickly shared with her the Bible has the answers she is looking for and in this case the answer comes from Hebrews 9:27 “Just as man is destined to die once, and after that to face judgment.” No second chances.

I saw that I need to take time this summer, especially with my oldest daughter being a senior this fall, to make sure that my girls know foundational truths. I’m planning to use as my resource, Apologetics for a New Generation: a Biblical and Culturally Relevant Approach to Talking About God. by Sean McDowell.

Be on the look out this summer for holes in your children’s faith. The time we have to fill those holes is short; let’s make good use of our days.

Do you have a resource you could share with us on teaching your children the foundations of your faith? We’d love to hear!

  1. Great book on the loving character of God: Finding the Father by Herb Montgomery of Renewed Hearts Ministry. I’ve heard him speak for a youth conference and a young adult conference.
