5 Verses for Building a Firm Foundation


 
Every single day we are constructing our lives. With each decision we make, those intentional and those not, we’re putting down building blocks in our lives; blocks we’ll build upon again tomorrow.

These blocks consist of so many everyday things. The words we say. The things we read. The stories we tell. The shows we watch. The songs we listen to. Simple, everyday acts.

This building needs to begin with a solid foundation; the type of foundation that holds up when life is good and when it’s not. This is why we emulate the person Jesus described, “… a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when a flood arose, the stream broke against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built.” Luke 6:48 (ESV)
 
Let’s Build a Firm Foundation
 
1.     Start Building on Firm Ground.
           
            Begin your day with the Lord:
 
            “…O God, You are my God; Early will I seek You; My soul thirsts for You; My flesh longs for You in a dry and thirsty land where there is no water.” Psalm 63:1b, NKJV
 
            There isn’t anything that makes spending time with the Lord in the morning more spiritual than any other time of the day. It does, however, set an intention for the way our building will go that day.
 
2.     Seek the Holy Spirit’s Building Plans.
 
            Many of us begin our day with our to-do list in hand; we’re set on what, when and how we will go about it. But Scripture tells us, “Unless the LORD builds a house, the work of the builders is wasted…” Psalm 127:1a (NLT) As we spend time with Him, ask the Lord to do His building through us instead of us doing what we think is right and best.
 
3.     Source the right tools.
 
            What we think determines our behavior. The right tools for building well begins with thinking right; thinking about what is true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent, and praiseworthy.
 
            Philippians 4:8 “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable— if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.” (NIV)
 
4.     Stack the right materials.
 
            Paul tells us that we are God’s building. Because we represent God Himself, we must be very careful to only build what lines up with Jesus Himself.
           
            1 Corinthians 3:9-11 “For we are both God’s workers. And you are God’s field. You are God’s building. Because of God’s grace to me, I have laid the foundation like an expert builder. Now others are building on it. But whoever is building on this foundation must be very careful. For no one can lay any foundation other than the one we already have—Jesus Christ.” (NLT)
 
5.     Step back and evaluate.

            In the busyness of life, we can get caught up in the work of daily living and forget to take some time to reflect. As a carpenter stops to examine his work, so must we step back at times and look at ours.
“Search me, O God, and know my heart; Try me and know my    anxious thoughts; And see if there be any hurtful way in me, And lead me in the everlasting way.” Psalm 139:23-24
