In-Law or Out-Law – Wednesday Wisdom Tip

“I can’t wait for the day when my guy’s mom is going to love me.” My heart giggled a bit as my daughter shared her future dream.

I hope it is not just a dream, but a reality. I pray that her future mother-in-law loves and cherishes her; sees her a gift to her husband.

When it comes to relationships with their future married-into-family, our daughter’s expectations are set by watching our relationship with our in-laws.

They hear the comments we make when we think they are not listening. They are aware of the time we make to nurture the relationship and make it a priority…or not.  They watch the way we honor or dishonor our in-laws and they silently create a model of how things are “supposed to be”.

Proverbs 14:1 tells us, “The wise woman builds her house, but with her own hands the foolish one tears hers down.” (NIV)

This Mother’s Day, let’s not just honor our own mothers, but the mothers of the men in our lives. Make sure your girl knows that in-laws can be a wonderful addition to the family they already have and building that type of relationship begins with honor.
